How to Read your Brakes - Brake-caused accidents and inspections with violations are both largely preventable by effective troubleshooting in three areas. • Air Pressure System - DOT looks for leaks anywhere in the system. You should too. • Foundation Brake - Having the push rod stroke out of adjustment is the single biggest reason for DOT citing faulty brakes. • Brake Lining - It can't be worn below the recommended service level or worn unevenly to any degree. Take a little time to read your brakes correctly, and you'll fix most problems with the six solutions listed below. • Uneven wear, edges or ends (check for worn bushings or bent spider) • Excessive wear in center (replace worn-out lining for proper friction level) • Lining wear rate differs (check mechanical input and air system) • Adjustment not holding (check slack adjuster & push rod lenghts) • Relined block delaminations (check for an old worn shoe) • Fade performance problems (check for a heat checked drum)
